Sebenarnya alamat di atas itu adalah URL ( Uniform Resource Locator). Sedangkan nama google, Wikipedia, national geographic ialah nama server/ hostname penyelenggara web.
Dibelakang hostname selalu terdapat singkatan 2/3 huruf, seperti com; net; co.id; go.id yang disebut domain name. Domain name menunjuk pada system penamaan alamat internet protocol. Domain name terdiri dari dua bagian atau lebih yang dipisah dengan tanda titik. Domain Name adalah nama pada alamat internet (URL), nama ini biasanya menunjukkan suatu perusahaan, organisasi, perorangan dan lainnya.
Domain name di internet selalu diakhiri dengan 2 huruf yang menunjuk pada nama negara tempat pemilik website berada. Contoh domain name negara :
id : Indonesia
sg : Singapura
my : Malaysia
th : Thailand
au : Australia
Untuk negara Amerika Serikat / USA huruf akhir dari domain name nya ada 3 huruf dan tidak menunjukkan nama negaranya, tapi menunjukkan jenis institusinya. Contoh dari domain name untuk AS :
edu : pendidikan (education)
gov : pemerintahan ( government)
com : bisnis/ komersial (commercial)
mil : militer (military)
net : institusi yang berhubungan dengan jaringan computer ( networking)
org : organisasi lain/ organisasi nonprofit
Negara-negara lain selain AS, menunjukkan jenis institusinya di depan domain name negaranya / sebelum domain name negaranya, misalnya yaitu :
ac : pendidikan (academy)
go : pemerintah ( government)
co : bisnis ( commercial )
net : institusi yang berhubungan dengan jaringan computer ( networking)
or : organisasi lain/ organisasi nonprofit
